Abstract

Purpose: This is a phenomenological study to describe the experiences of nursing students on elderly living alone in community.

Method: Data were collected from september to October 2005. Individual interviews were conducted on subjective experiences of 19 nursing students. Date were analyzed through Colaizzi¡¯s method in which meaningful statements were extracted and these were clustered into 7 themes.

Result: The nursing students started practice with anxiety and expectation at the same time. They also experienced complicated feeling for the clients. However, the nursing practice was a chance for them to recognize on the clients. They felt both caring experience of the nursing practice and restricted self-capability at the same time. They also experienced individual emotion through the interaction with clients caring experience of elderly living alone provided them an opportunity of self-reflection. This includes increased awareness of issues for elderly living alone, building of self-identity as a nursing student, self-growth.

Conclusions: This Study may provide data for better recognizing of nursing students experiences of caring on elderly living alone. Above all, they came to have a wide perspectives of the elderly caring through the community practice.
